I’m not sure if you’re aware but women’s sports are so hot right now. And as someone who has made that their whole personality, I have found myself in hot demand.
This is choice, I am getting to have all the conversations I love to have. About gender in sport, about possibilities and game changers. It does mean I have found myself just a touch over committed this week.
Tonight, I have the pleasure of joining my LockerRoom sister, Ashley Stanley, to have some yarns at the opening of Skateface up in Auckland.
Skateface is a photography exhibition on roller derby (rad!) and they are using this opportunity to have some wider conversation about women in sport.
If you want to join us, please do! We will be kicking off at 6.30pm at Silo6.
And if you miss that, I’m MCing an event back down in Welly next Thursday morning in the lead up to the USA v Netherlands game exciting!
Phil Walter/Getty Images captures Wilkinson’s joy
It was Megan Rapinoe who said, “You can’t win without gay players.” And Hannah Wilkinson proved that point last night at Eden Park.
With all the bullshit from FIFA towards the queer community in the lead up to the event, it was so validating to see an out and proud player score the first goal of the tournament, in the first ever World Cup win for a New Zealand football team, in front of a record crowd for football (men or women).
It’s fucking poetry. You couldn’t have written a sweeter start.
Auckland has shown up when it matter for women’s sport, my hometown, Wellington, finally has our chance. So all aboard the Football Ferns hype train folks! If you haven’t yet get your tickets to our match against the Phillipines this Tuesday, get on it!
So just like the notable queers during Pride month, I am suddenly finding everyone wants to talk to me. All of this means, I’m not going to be able the FPC preview out to you ahead of tomorrow.
But for your quick reference, here is the schedule:

2.05pm - Waikato v Canterbury
A fierce rivalry goes another round
4.35pm - Counties Manukau Heat v Bay of Plenty Volcanix

What influence will the pride of Samoa have over the pride of the south?

Alice
